Important as in life or death situation? No. Beneficial? Yes.
Any instrument really will ultimately benefit your child. If they learn an instrument young and stick to it(most importantly), they can use it as a medium to express themselves. Knowledge expands the brain. Knowing how to play piano or any instrument expands their mind. It helps them notice patterns, listen more attentively, and so on. They can also join a band or orchestra and make a fairly decent amount of money as well.
Kids learn faster than adults.
Keyboards are cheaper than pianos if you don’t already have one. Get one that is “Grand touched” meaning that the keys respond to pressure.
Or if piano isn’t their thing try guitar. Try the drums. Try bass. Try violin. Music is the great communicator. It can say things that words can’t.
Not for all kids, if they want to learn it could be very important. If not perhaps they would prefer a different instrument.
